Assessing the Qualities of a Good Treasurer

What makes someone a good treasurer? Is it their education, experience, personality or perhaps (most likely) a combination? There are a number of ways to assess. One can interview, check references and look at a candidate while he executes the function. In this blog, we will explore four popular, objective options, three of their specialized education, and one online assessment.

  • The Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) designation
  • Certificates in Treasury (offered by ACT)
  • The Registered Treasurer (RT) program
  • The Treasurer Test

Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) designation

Let’s begin with the CTP designation. This is a globally recognized certification of US origin that demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of treasury management. To obtain this designation, candidates must pass an exam covering topics such as cash and liquidity management, risk management, and financial reporting. The CTP designation is a credential that is respected by employers worldwide and can open doors to higher-paying jobs and career advancement.

Certificates in Treasury (offered by ACT)

Moving on to the treasury programs offered by the ACT. The ACT offers treasury programs that can earn you a certificate, signifying your dedication and expertise in treasury management. These certificates are a testament to your commitment to going beyond basic job duties and pursuing additional education to enhance your skills and knowledge. Possessing a CertTF means you have a foundational understanding of treasury management, while a CertICM showcases your global cash management expertise. The AMCT demonstrates your advanced knowledge and practical experience in treasury management. Having one of these certificates signifies to potential employers and colleagues that you have the technical competencies to excel in treasury management and are dedicated to your professional growth. It also provides access to a community of professionals who share your passion for the field and networking opportunities. The AMCT demands more from a treasury student than the CTP.

Registered Treasurer (RT) program.

The most comprehensive of the three education programs is the postgraduate Executive Treasury Management & Corporate Finance program offered by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This program is a unique offering that combines two closely connected finance disciplines: treasury management and corporate finance. Over the course of 18 months, you will delve into academic theory and practical case studies to develop your knowledge and understanding of these critical finance disciplines. Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded the coveted title of Registered Treasurer (RT), which is recognized within the treasury professionals’ community.

Treasurer Test

Last but not least, there is the Treasurer Test. This is a comprehensive online assessment that evaluates a candidate’s current knowledge and understanding of treasury management concepts and principles. Regardless of their education. The test covers a wide range of topics, including cash management, investment management, and financial risk management. Passing the Treasurer Test demonstrates a high level of proficiency in treasury management and can be used as a tool for self-assessment and professional development, be it for a new position or starting an education. Different from the previous options, the Treasurer Test also includes a personality assessment and cannot be categorized as an education.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the qualities that make someone a good treasurer are not easily defined or measured. However, the options we have discussed in this blog – the CTP designation, the RT program, and the Treasurer Test – are all valuable tools for objectively assessing a candidate’s knowledge, skills, and expertise in the field of treasury management. Whether you are looking to advance your career, validate your skills, or simply improve your knowledge of treasury management, these options are well worth exploring. So, why not take the next step and discover which option is right for you?
